The Nigerian Police (NP) is the principal law enforcement agency in Nigeria with a staff strength of about 371, 800. It was first established in Imo in the year 1820 and it began with officers from Imo State.

The Nigerian Police (NP) is a very large organisation consisting of 36 states command grouped into 12 zones and 7 administrative organs. The agency is currently headed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Kpotun Idris.
Functions Of The Nigerian Police includes;
1. They ensure internal security of the state.
2. They maintain law and order in the state.
3. They arrest any offender who goes against the law.
4. They prevent crime occurrence.
5. They protect lives and properties of the citizens.
6. They investigate crimes or criminal activities in the society. The department set up to do this is known as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The Nigerian Police motto says: The Police is your Friend.
